Medical Laboratory Scientist, Grade 1.
Full Time Fixed Term, 12 months

A vacancy exists for a full-time, fixed term medical laboratory scientist in the Serology department at the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory (VIDRL), Melbourne Health at the Doherty Institute.

The position is in the serology section of the laboratory, which is responsible for the diagnosis of a wide range of infectious diseases. Experience in a range of serological techniques such as manual EIA, immunofluorescence, agglutination assays and experience operating automated equipment such as: Liaison XL, Siemens BEP and Tecan Freedom EVO would be advantageous.

Applicants for the position should have a minimum of a BSc or Laboratory Science degree or equivalent. Previous experience in serological diagnostic assays is essential. The person should be able to work under supervision have good attention to detail and must be able to work effectively as part of a team. The successful candidate should also be well organised, self-motivated and have excellent communication skills.

About the Role
The AIMSS Clinical Research Manager is a critical role with the Australian Institute of Musculoskeletal Science (AIMSS). AIMSS is a collaborative institute for research into disorders of ageing, bone, muscle and joint, the promotion of disease prevention and evidence-based interventions including exercise and nutrition. The Manager will be responsible for managing and co-ordinating all investigator-initiated trials: from project design to ethics/governance applications and from recruitment to dissemination of the data. They will also provide support and mentoring to researchers and support staff involved in both investigator-initiated and other clinical trials undertaken within AIMSS.

Duties

– Responsible for managing and co-ordinating all investigator-initiated trials within AIMSS. This will involve a range of activities from project design to ethics/governance applications and from recruitment to dissemination of the data.
– Provide support and mentoring to researchers and support staff involved in both investigator-initiated and other clinical trials undertaken within AIMSS.
– Assist the AIMSS Scientific Advisory Committee during the allocations of seed grants, scholarships and other research funding activities at AIMSS.
– Organising and implementing an integrated database system for investigator-initiated trials undertaken within AIMSS.
– Liaise with the researchers from the AIMSS strategic partners to develop future projects and continue to engage with all internal and external stakeholders to promote, expand and implement the AIMSS strategic plan.
– Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders internal and external to the AIMSS.

Skills & Experience

– Demonstrated extensive experience of project management in the health and/or university area including proven ability to determine clear priorities for project and self, and work to deadlines.
– Experienced in coordinating clinical trials, including the submission of Human Research Ethics and governance proposals, clinical trial procedures, documentation and auditing of clinical trials.
– Experience with working with clinical trials requiring multisite ethics approval.
– A strong understanding of the principles of Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
– Experience with Electronic Data Capture and clinical trial data basing.
– Exceptional project management and/or organisational skills.
– Proven ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
– High level skills in preparing reports, proposals and presentations.
– Strong oral communication and presentation skills.
– Experience with preparing budgets for clinical trials and other research initiatives, as well as business cases.

– Postgraduate qualifications in life sciences/health.

Sleep Scientist Grade 1

– Part Time, 16 hours per fortnight

We are a 6-bed NATA accredited sleep laboratory operating 7 nights per week. The vacant shifts are 18:00 – 22:00; and are usually performed in conjunction with another Sleep Scientist, with some independent work.

We are seeking a motivated Scientist (Grade 1) to join our Sleep Laboratory on a part time basis. You will be responsible for preparing patients for sleep studies, including sensor placement and calibration, performing diagnostic and treatment studies and liaising with medical and other staff. Experience is not essential but will be positively regarded. Flexibility to fill in other shifts (including overnight) and a commitment to positive patient experience will be highly desired. The successful candidate will have a science degree or equivalent.

Medical Scientist Grade 1

A full time fixed term position exists for a Grade 1 Scientist in our Anatomical Pathology Department at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. The successful applicant must have a dedicated degree in Medical Laboratory Science with a major in Histology, with a major in Cytology an advantage.

Experience in Histology is essential, with experience in Cytology being an advantage however not essential. Scientists with experience in Histology are encouraged to apply. Following suitable training, you will be rotated through the various areas of the laboratory performing duties which include:

– Set up and assist with surgical cut up.
– Embedding and paraffin sectioning of biopsy specimens.
– Perform routine, special staining and immunohistochemistry techniques using prescribed methodologies and appropriate control procedures.
– Operation and general maintenance of tissue processing equipment.
– Prepare sections from “Frozen Section” specimens for urgent diagnosis.
– Assist at renal biopsy procedures to ensure appropriate tissue sampling.
– Preparation of Non-Gynaecological Cytology samples.
– Attendance of procedures requiring Cytology services when required.
– On call duties as per laboratory roster
– Other duties as directed.

The successful candidate is expected to participate in staff rotations, On call roster, self education activities, internal & external training courses, and in clinical and scientific meetings.

A vacancy exists for a full-time, fixed term (2 years) senior medical scientist within the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory (VIDRL), at the Doherty Institute.

The primary role of this position is to head the VIDRL Haematology laboratory taking responsibility for the performance and interpretation of a wide range of routine and specialised haematology tests, along with the diagnosis/monitoring of infectious diseases. Knowledge of protocols, appropriate for operating in a PC2 laboratory, experience in the procedures, operation and maintenance of haematology analysers and flow cytometers and detailed knowledge of ISO 15189 requirements are essential.

Applicants should be capable and professional leaders with at least 10 years’ experience and advanced technical skills in Haematology

Applicants must have the following qualifications for this position:

– A Degree in Science or B. Applied Science (Laboratory Medicine) specialising in Haematology.
– Not less than 10 years full time laboratory experience relevant to Haematology
– As well as one of the following qualifications:
– A Doctorate of Philosophy in a relevant field
– A Fellowship of the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists in Haematology

Main duties for this role include:

– Leading the Haematology laboratory
– Ensuring a high quality responsive diagnostic service
– Ensuring quality and financial targets are met
– Overseeing laboratory technical development and validation
– Liaising with health authorities and healthcare professionals

This Perth based company is currently seeking a Chemist to join a gold and base metal chemical analysis laboratory that provides services to the mining industry. They analyze around 9000 samples per week from large mining explorers. They are equipped with fire assay furnaces, drying ovens, and an Atomic Absorption Spectrometer.

The Role
Reporting directly to the Managing Director, the Chemist will be responsible for approx. 15 people in the laboratory. This is a salaried position for a nominal 40 hours per week, which is divided into shifts over a 7 day week. The successful applicant must have flexibility to work as directed by management. The company is looking for someone to take on a leadership role within the team, and be responsible for staff management as well as client liaising. Other responsibilities will include:
